18" X 24" Christian Poster, featuring the Clydesdale Horses.
This poster was inspired by a page from Jon Courson's Application Commentary: New Testament.
My husband and I were studying the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus says in Matt 5:5
"Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth."
Jon Courson pointed out that the word Meek, used here is PRAUS, or PRAOS in the Greek, and is a term used to describe a powerful stallion, broken and able to be ridden.
It is also, as Jon Courson points out, a word used by Jesus in Matt 11:28-30, in what Courson says is the only autobiographical description Jesus made of His personality.
My husband used to sell veterinary medicine at Southern California Racetracks where the Budweiser Clydesdale horses were often part of the opening ceremonies. He said people would crowd around these giant animals, to the point of really being dangerously close. These giant, powerful horses, who could crush a man quite easily, would step lightly, and "meekly", being very careful not to hurt anyone. This is what my husband saw in this verse about Jesus. A man, who though full of the power of the creator of the universe Himself, chose to 'bridle' himself, to lower Himself, to yoke Himself to man. He chose not to "Master" man, and dominate man, but instead to gently lead, with love and kindness; to help us and give us rest and peace. A peace that surpasses human understanding.
I will never see the "meek and lowly" Jesus the same way again.
